No More Red Food

While reading the news during lunch, I came across this article about additives that are in foods that you may not know about. One of these ingredients is carmine, which is a popular coloring agent used to give foods such as cranberry juice that red color. What is carmine exactly?

"According to the FDA, this red food coloring (also known as cochineal extract) is made from dried, ground bugs. The Dactylopius coccus costa insect is native to Peru and the Canary Islands, where it feeds on red berries. The berries accumulate in the females' stomachs and in their unhatched larvae - which is what gives the extract its red coloring."  - MSN

Uh, yuck? Ground insect larvae in my strawberry ice cream? No thanks. No more red food for me.

El Dorado Saturdays

You would think that Friday night at Onyx would have been enough partying for us, but then you forget who we're talking about. We're talkin' about the ultimate ragers of '09 baby!
Determined to continue our partying streak, our group headed out the next night to do some damage at everyone's favorite anti-club: El Dorado.
Gelly can make you laugh anytime, anywhere as Annabelle demonstrates here.
The music had everyone movin'.
Partners in crime reunited. Megs doesn't know this yet, but she's the love of my life.
Scott of One People Project knows how to talk to the ladies.
Peace, unity, prosperity.
Its easy to spot SD's finest anywhere. He's the one being mobbed by all the ladies.
This picture makes me laugh. Jon and Mikey are always so intense.
Mystery at Broadway Pizza.
After El Dorado, I hailed a cab for myself, Meg, Larelle, and her other friend back to the girls' house. I didn't suspect anything until after I had a conversation with Scott about our respective cab rides, but apparently we were both overcharged by shady cab drivers who don't turn on the meters. Note to self: Watch out for shady taxi drivers who are out to get poor, unsuspecting [intoxicated] passengers.

One Week Ago.

I'm so behind!
Last Friday - Onyx was hot & steamy. Their air conditioning was broken.

Dolphin Rescue

You know those experiences that once it happens, you know it'll stay with you for the rest of your lifetime? Last night I had one of those happen to me.
It all began with a night at Saloon in Encinitas with Annabelle, Scott, and Mikey. After we left the bar, Scott wanted to go down to the beach. It was already around 1AM but we all trekked down the stairs to the beach. As soon as we got to the foot of the stairs, I saw a large silver mass moving on the sand. Annabelle and I kinda stopped and were like "What IS that?! WTF is that??" And then we all realized... it was a beached dolphin.

The poor thing was laying on its side, flapping its tail pretty weakly. We decided that we would try to get it back to the water. Scott pulled it towards the water.. but once it got to the waves, we knew it was too shallow for the dolphin to swim in.
Even though it was a baby dolphin, it was pretty damn heavy. Scott had to drag it because it was just impossible for us to lift it.
I think we were laughing just out of shock because of the whole craziness of the situation.. who expects to find a dolphin stranded on the beach and having to rescue it??
Scott and I tried picking it up to carry it to deeper water but it was just too heavy for us to lift it. We hadn't even thought about taking our shoes off.. Scott ruined his shoes and I went in wearing 3 inch heeled boots.
Scott and I trying to turn it towards the water.. the dolphin was disoriented and confused.
Eventually we both thought to take our shoes off and ended up going waist-deep into the ocean to try to get the dolphin back to the water.
After several failed attempts (the dolphin kept rolling over on its side and trying to go the wrong way back onto the shore), we finally were able to roll/push/drag the dolphin far enough into the water. As we watched the dolphin's tail flip up out of the water as he swam away, I think we all cheered.
Success!!
Ruined boots, jacket, water-damaged Blackberry, and a pet rock as a keepsake to remember the night's events.
Team Dolphin Rescue
Annabelle and I are so happy we saved the dolphin!
My toes were seriously numb by this point.

Even though my Blackberry was ruined from the night, it was definitely worth it. Afterwards, I came up with a name for him.. Noah the dolphin. Hopefully he made it back okay.. I miss him already!

The Skateboard Story

On Friday night, a bunch of us were at Bumsville just lounging around the house. While the boys were watching tv, Annabelle, Terry, Josie and I decided to go outside and get some exercise. We busted out the skateboard, bike, and Terry's old school roller skates. What happened next was pure comedy.
I don't know if any of you knew this, but I'm pretty impressive at skateboarding. So impressive, in fact, that not only can I jump off the skateboard and launch it straight at a trolley, but I can also make it ricochet off, and then roll back into the trolley which then drags it 50 feet along the tracks. All without breaking the board.
And of course with my luck, it wasn't just a car coming through at that very moment but a freakin' trolley train loaded with passengers. I'm pretty sure that when the skateboard was being dragged along with the trolley, my heart stopped, because we all thought the trolley might derail or something. Amazingly though, it didn't.. and Annabelle's skateboard survived, minus the fact that now it has a few battle scars along the deck.
I guess I need some practice. Haha.
