1, 2, or 3

During my lifetime, I’ve discovered that there are generally three types of people.
CATEGORY ONE:
People who fall into this category are those with a sense of entitlement. When good things happen to them, they never question why. In their way of thinking, it’s only natural that things should have fallen into place so perfectly - why shouldn’t they have? They’ve never considered reciprocating because it is not in their nature to feel the requirement to repay good deeds. To them, good fortune is based on their own positive attribute - they’re likeable, lucky, attractive, etc.
CATEGORY TWO:
Those who belong in category two believe in equanimity. “One good deed deserves another” is their mantra. These individuals tend to compensate - if someone has done a favor for them, they will gladly return the favor. Category Two individuals can almost alway be counted on to do what is expected of them - primarily because their mindset is programmed to do just enough to call it even. Category Two people can usually be depended on to match what has been done for them.
CATEGORY THREE:
These are the overachievers, the rare souls that believe that if someone has done a good deed for them, that person deserves to be repaid tenfold for their kindness. These individuals are not motivated by recognition but a sense of duty. They are moved by a desire to improve the well-being of those they care about, regardless of what they might receive in return. To them, the simple happiness of those they help is worth more than any flattery or compliment they can ever receive. These people are the ones who take initiative. They do things for other without being asked, simply because they tend to think in advance about how they might bring a smile to the faces of those they love.
I personally believe that everybody has the potential to be in this last category. It is a matter of personal growth. To me, “Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself” isn’t good enough. I’d rather say “Treat others with compassion, and it will show you that there is no excuse for being treated with anything less yourself.” One meets his/her full potential when they come to the realization of how much they can care about someone other than him or herself. Your own concept of self worth will be based on how much you invest in others. If you treat someone like they’re golden, it’s only natural that you will begin to think “I deserve to be treated like this too.”

Why Ask Why?

Most ineffective and useless questions that we ask start with "Why".

WHY DID I/HE/SHE/THEY/WE....

 - Why did I do that?
Figuring this out rarely changes what happened. As far as I know, time machines have not yet been invented. You can't go back and change anything, so the only logical thing to do? Move forward.

WHY HAVEN'T/HASN'T I/HE/SHE/THEY/WE...
- Why hasn't he/she called me back?
Millions of angst-ridden people around the world can vouch for this simple fact: No matter how many days you spend obsessing over this, it will not make your phone magically ring.
You can do one of two things:
  1. Take the initiative and call that person again, or
  2. Hey, what was that one movie called.. the one with Scarlett Johansson and Justin Long? Oh yes.. HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU.
WHY IS...
- Why is this damn flight so expensive??
Shit. Even if I knew, would it save me any money? No. Would it make me feel any better about spending that much? Highly doubtful.

The point is, asking ourselves why something did or didn't happen doesn't create the result we were hoping for. So quit asking why this, why that, why is the sky blue, why did the chicken cross the road, etc. and

I'm ready and willing to give up everything that means nothing, in exchange for a life with nothing that means everything.

Cars, trains, bikes, planes... and music.

Music is my mode of transportation.

Have you ever heard a certain song and felt a familiar stir of emotions from your past? Most likely it'll be a song that was playing during a milestone in your life, like the first time you made love with someone, or the song that came on the radio just at the perfect moment during an epic road trip with your buddies. Maybe it's that one song you had on repeat while you cried your eyes out after that one breakup.

Music does more than just set the mood for me. I will literally avoid listening to certain songs and albums in my library sometimes because I don't want to "go back" to the places that they'll take me to. Some music is permanently associated with certain periods of my life, both good and bad. Zero 7's "Destiny" reminds me of nights I spent unwinding in a hot bubble bath with candles lit. Chromeo will forever bring me fond memories of a certain dear friend who used to play it all the time (you know who you are!) La Roux's "Bulletproof" was the anthem of a girls' night out in LA late last year. The entire Local Natives album Gorilla Manor was my go-to soundtrack during my recent trip to New York. Band of Horses made a terribly sad and perfect album of breakup songs. And a bbq just isn't a bbq if I haven't heard T.W.D.Y.'s "Players Holiday" at least once. The list goes on, but you get the point.

I know I'm not the only one.. everyone has a breakup album or two. But even beyond that, I'd be curious to hear what other people's songs are.

Whenever you're left with only one option, console yourself by this: It is now your best option.

i used to have a silver bracelet imprinted with this Latin quote from Hannibal:

Aut viam inveniam aut faciam.

... which translates to "i will either find a way, or i will make one."
i find it so simple, yet so empowering and motivational. i'm adopting it as my mantra.

Appreciate what you're given, work with what you have, take risks, and give it all your effort.

show & tell.

Promises are sometimes just that.. promises. A vow, a commitment, to give someone your word.

But then one day you realize that words are just sounds created by the vibration of vocal chords - meaningless until given one by the speaker
... meanings that are formed through the intentions of the speaker, then either validated or stripped of credibility by their actions.

and one day you realize that sometimes, people like to talk just to hear the sound of their own voices.
that's the day you also realize that sometimes, words are empty.

and that's when you finally learn not to listen, but to see.

 tell  SHOW.

new year. 2010.

its almost the new year, and the end of a decade. no resolutions for me this year, just wants. let's just see how it goes.

i want to run away back to the city. i want to dance, and not think about anything else. i want to walk on the sidewalks of a strange city while listening to music through my headphones. i want to lay on top of a grassy hill and watch the clouds drift by overhead, squinting against the glaring sunlight. i want to sort out the tangles of confusion that's in my heart and head. i want to laugh until my makeup runs. i want to volunteer at an animal shelter. i want to sit at a cafe with dark sunglasses and a hat and pretend to be someone famous for a day. i want to smoke cigarettes with good people over coffee. i want to learn and master a new language. i want to lock myself into seclusion, get drunk, and write an amazing book. i want to love and feel loved. i want to figure out what the fuck love is. i want to spend lots and lots of money and not feel guilty. i want to be blissfully ignorant for a day, week, or maybe even the year. i want to figure out what i want to do with my life. i want to make a living, but not if i have to stop living just to make one. i want to see the world. i want to save the world. i want to pack a basket with amazing food and go on a picnic with someone special. i want to make at least one stranger smile each day. i want to be happy.
